MOCA Art in the Streets

So this isn't a beauty/fashion post. Instead I wanted to share a little bit of LA!

The Museum of Contemporary Art (or MOCA as we call it in LA) is the west coast answer to New York's MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and London's Tate Modern.
MOCA is special because there are 3 branches and each I feel has a unique vibe. There's the Pacific Design Center which has a more fashion oriented vibe (currently on display are Rodarte creations including the ones seen in the movie Black Swan), there's the main Grand Ave location, and the Geffen Contemporary.
I went to the Geffen Contemporary to see an exhibit titled "Art in the Streets". Its about street art and graffiti.

Street art these past few years has experienced a MAJOR explosion thanks to artists like Shepard Fairey and Banksy. Surely you've heard of these two names right?

Shepard Fairey created this historic and verrrry popular image of Obama during his presidential campaign. A viral photo indeed.

Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, commissioned street artist Stephen Sprouse to design a line of speedy bags. Pretty cool right?

The MOCA (Geffen) is located in the heart of downtown LA in Japantown. Its actually a pretty large space. Probably was a factory or something at one point.

Even the bathrooms got to take part in the fun!

The point of this exhibit was to look at graffiti and street art as legitimate forms of art. Growing up in Los Angeles...pretty much everything gets tagged on. We kind of view it as ruining property. After a seeing this exhibit, however, I can say that I appreciate the more sophisticated street artists out there.

Los Angeles is definitely not lacking in culture (a popular criticism I hear) or a wonderful art scene and I think this proves it. If you happen to be in LA or live in LA come visit this exhibit! Its very fun and entertaining as long as you bring an open mind :) It runs til August.

So even though this post is a far cry from my usual stuff, I hope it was a fun read and you learned something!

And in case you were wondering....I did exit through the gift shop....

MILK

Every city has its dessert shops right?
Los Angeles...just happens to be riddled with them.
Maybe its because we have a lot of hipsters...but trendy bakeries&eateries are everywhere.
As for me? I'm no hipster...but when a place has TONS of reviews on Yelps I will try it out to see if it worth coming back to.

Milk is not your average bakery/dessert place.
They serve food and specialize in all things whose main ingredient is MILK! (surprise!)
My favorite are their ice creams.
The first picture shows their BLUE velvet cake! It has blueberries and lots of blue food dye.
The second picture shows some delicious ice cream bars!
My favorite one is the banana dulce de leche ice cream covered in butterscotch (bar on the right).
Soooo delicious! The other bar is red velvet. It was just okay.
The last picture is of some baked goods including mini red velvet cupcakes, normal sized ones, and cupcakes in an ice cream cone! Gotta try that someday.

So if you are ever in LA and hankering for some REAL sweet stuff come visit Milk!

Huntington Botanical Gardens

Sorry for not posting for awhile. This week started off really promising but turned tragic real quick. But luckily al the drama has died down a bit...so back to blogging.

I was lucky to visit a semi-Los Angeles secret: Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens
Here are some pictures from my visit and an outfit of the day picture!

There are quite a few gardens at the Huntington (desert, jungle, Japanese, Chinese, Rose, Children) but I guess spring hasn't officially sprung as many of the trees & gardens were flowerless.

The Japanese and Chinese gardens were definitely the high point. The Japanese garden you may recognize from the movie Memoirs of a Geisha. It unfortunately is going to be closed for renovations until NEXT YEAR so I wanted to check it out before it closed.
The Chinese garden had a little restaurant where you can grab some not-so-authentic Chinese food and catch some gorgeous views of the giant pond with bridges & San Gabriel mountains.

As for what I'm wearing?
Polka dot top: Marshalls (its supposed to be a dress? but its kind of short and see through)
blazer: Forever 21 (lined REALLY weird. not sold anymore...)
boots: Marshalls (bought on sale for $15! Great buy although I did have to buy a size larger than I normally wear. Socks are my bffs with these boots!)

I want to try to incorporate more of LA and food into my blogs. I want this blog have more dimensions and aspects to it. I hope you guys don't mind :)
